PUPIL
Pronounced: “PYOO pul”
Pupil comes from the Latin word pupilla, meaning “doll,” “puppet,” or “little person,” which is why we call schoolchildren “pupils.”

And that’s the most romantic etymology in the whole wide world.
You may have seen him before on Ted.com or Def Poetry Slam. I came across his name again after some youtubing. Turns out he’s been hard at work this time for…Tommy Hilfiger? Sure thing. He’s been coupled with Leonardo Didouchebag’s ex-girlfriend and Sport’s Illustrated cover model Bar Refaeli to do a show exploring American pop culture and where it all came from. It’s pretty smart stuff: who popularized eye make-up and how does that relate to the Headless Horseman? Plus, the Bar Refaeli eye candy doesn’t hurt either.
